Today is World Book Day, and more than 14m books are expected to be given away around the world. The event focuses on children, hoping to encourage a lifelong love of reading, and half a million children are expected to watch the online Biggest Book Show on Earth featuring the likes of Julia Donaldson, Eoin Colfer and Jacqueline Wilson.
On Twitter, users are being encouraged to tell the World Book Day UK account which fictional character they would like to be for a day, using the hashtag #fictionalforaday. The aim is to get people talking about books in ways they perhaps otherwise wouldn’t. So far, the most popular suggestions seem to be Harry Potter or Lyra from the His Dark Materials series.
Meanwhile, the World Book Day app features contributions from Malorie Blackman, Neil Gaiman, Charlie Higson, Anthony Horowitz and others. The focus is very much on traditional publishing and authors, but indie authors can also get in on the action with their own promotions, and many are timing their free KPD Select days on Amazon to coincide with the event.
