Jean Giraud, one of France’s most successful comic book artists and an accomplished graphic designer, has died at the age of 73. He was also known as Moebius and Gir.
With Jean-Michel Charlier, Giraud created the hugely popular western series Blueberry, which has now been running for almost 50 years. The series chronicles the adventures of Mike Blueberry in the American Old West, and is notable for being one of the first attempts to create an anti-hero western protagonist in the comicbook world.
As Moebius, Giraud was well-known for his sometimes surreal sci-fi comic books such as Arzach and The Incal. He also worked on a number of film projects, contributing storyboard and concept designs to a number of hit films including the original Alien as well as the likes of Tron and Willow. He worked briefly on a Silver Surfer comic book storyline for Marvel in the 80s, and his work appeared on stamps as well as in a number of exhibitions.
