Doctor Who charity book Behind the Sofa hits Paypal account freeze problem

A Doctor Who charity book has allegedly had its Paypal account frozen. The book, Behind the Sofa, aims to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK, but has now allegedly had its account frozen pending the delivery of some information about the project.

The book’s organiser, Steve Berry, says that the book will still be going ahead despite Paypal’s action. Meanwhile, the likes of Charlie Brooker, Neil Gaiman and Al Murray have chimed in to question Paypal’s approach. The Radio Times has also run a story about the issue. So far, there’s no news as to whether Paypal is going to change its mind.

Paypal is already involved in an ongoing ‘discussion’ with Smashwords about payment services. A lot of people have long been arguing that Amazon should use Paypal to deliver funds to KDP authors. But in the light of this latest incident, perhaps it’s worth considering alternative payment services? As someone who once used Paypal but now wouldn’t touch the service with a ten foot bargepole, I’d say we can just hope that the Behind the Sofa charity project is still able to go ahead.
