Jennifer L. Scott’s Lessons From Madame Chic: The Top 20 Things I Learned While Living in Paris, has been picked up by Simon & Schuster. The self-published book almost hit Amazon’s Top 100 and will now go ‘off-sale’ until the S&S version is released later this year.
Scott broke the news in a blog post, confirming that the deal was handled by her new agent Erica Silverman, from Trident Media Group. As well as an ebook, Madame Chic will be released as a physical book in stores across America and elsewhere. Because the book is now unavailable for a while, second-hand copies of the original self-published physical edition are being hawked for $100+ online, though whether there are any takes at that price remains to be seen.
The deal shows that self-published authors can still get the attention of traditional publishers and agents if they achieve enough sales under their own steam. But it also shows some of the pitfalls of the traditional model, with Madame Chic likely to be unavailable for six months while the gears of the publishing house slowly turn.
