A paranormal romance series about vampires? I really wasn’t sure I was going to like Dark Season – The Complete First Series, but to my surprise I found myself hooked pretty quickly. This omnibus edition collects together the first eight books, which tell the story of a girl named Sophie who becomes caught up in the adventures of Patrick, the last vampire.
There’s a genuinely epic tone to Dark Season. Individual stories, like episodes of a television show, are linked together by a greater narrative. The sixth part of the series, titled Gothos, is by far the best paranormal romance title I’ve read for a long time, while the other seven are all fascinating. Patrick, in particular, is a fascinating character who actually make vampires interesting again. Give Dark Season to someone who is infatuated with Twilight, and watch them shiver as they encounter a real vampire.
I admit that I found the character of Sophie to be quite annoying at first. She makes some dumb decisions, but after a while I began to realise that this is part of her character. There’s even a moment where another character points out her flaws. I liked that. The omnibus ends on a couple of big, big cliffhangers, which might annoy some readers. But overall, this is a great entry into the vampire canon.
