A new free tool offers to help authors root out overused and repeated words. SmartWrite runs five individual checks on a document, scanning for the kind of elementary mistakes that can be easy to miss when you’re writing but which can stand out like a sore thumb for a reader.
SmartWrite looks like being a step up from the basic grammar / spelling check tools that authors use. While no automatic tool can ever spot all mistakes, it looks like SmartWrite can identify instances where writers have perhaps relied too heavily on the same phrases.
The program can be set to watch out for words and phrases that you have set it to monitor, can check for overused tags (e.g. using “he said” or “she said” to many times), and can watch for word frequency problems. SmartWrite is an offshoot of the PageFour novel-writing software.
