Review: Nerves of Steel (Hart and Drake #1) by C.J. Lyons (3.5 stars)

Dr. Cassie Hart finds herself in mortal danger after she traces a dangerous new drug back to her own hospital. With young patients overdosing on the mysterious FX substance, Cassie teams up with Detective Mickey Drake and their relationship soon goes far beyond the point of professionalism.

A fast-paced thriller, Nerves of Steel (Hart and Drake #1) is a fairly by-the-numbers thriller that nevertheless manages to deliver some genuine surprises. Hart and Drake, destined for their own series of books, are a decent double act, even if there’s perhaps room for some more original qualities. As the first instalment in an ongoing series, however, this is certainly a strong primer.

C.J. Lyons has worked as a pediatric ER physician and her experience shows: the world of Hart and Drake feels very realistic, and it’s clear that the book was written by someone who understands the medical world. Ultimately, this is a very decent thriller with some dark themes and a few real surprises up its sleeves.

Star rating for Nerves of Steel (Hart and Drake #1): 3.5 stars.
