It seems there’s a new Kindle Fire 2 rumour every day, and most of them are emanating from China, where the unit is being produced. It’s now being reported by Unwired View that Amazon has ordered 2m units, with the plan being to make an announcement on July 13st and then to start shipping one week later. As ever, these plans are clearly not set in stone, even if they are accurate.
The Kindle Fire 2 under discussion here is a 7-inch device with 1280×720 specifications and a metal frame with a plastic chassis. There’s no word so far about the rumoured 9-inch or 10-inch sizes, but 2m is a lot of units for Amazon to order so inevitably there’s speculation that the 7-inch will be launched alone, with the larger devices perhaps being held back.
The Kindle Fire 2 is extremely important for Amazon, because it comes at a time when the company is seeing a significant challenge from the likes of the iPad. A 7-inch iPad has been rumoured for a while, despite the fact that the late Steve Jobs was famously dismissive of the idea. It’s worth remembering that the screen size is measured diagonally.
