Simon & Schuster’s Atria imprint has signed up Jamie McGuire‘s self-published Beautiful Disaster. The novel, about a dangerous bet made between two very different people, has been riding high in the Amazon charts for some time now, and has amassed a legion of dedicated fans. It’s estimated that more than 200,000 copies have been sold so far. Here’s McGuire’s take on the news.
Atria will now release a trade paperback edition of Beautiful Disaster in August, which will sell alongside the ebook edition that has been performing so well. It also looks like McGuire’s next novel, Walking Disaster, will be released through the company some time in 2013. Walking Disaster is set to continue the story of Beautiful Disaster from a different viewpoint.
Atria is home to a number of popular literary fiction authors, including the likes of Jodi Picoult and Douglas Kennedy. The signing of Jamie McGuire is the latest example of a self-published author being snapped up following indie success. As this Washington Post story on the deal hints, the success of Fifty Shades of Grey seems to have spurred publishers on in their quest to find promising self-published work.
