Amazon is planning “five or six” new tablet devices plus an Android-based smartphone, according to Staples boss Demos Parneros (via Mashable). There’s no word as to when the new devices will be available, but Amazon is predicted to launch a thinner, lighter Kindle Fire device within the next month.
Amazon’s aim with the new devices seems to be to diversify the Kindle so that it becomes more than an ereader. With physical sales of DVDs and CDs declining, but downloads becoming more popular, Amazon clearly wants to get into the digital market in a bigger way.
One of the new Amazon devices is rumoured to be code-named Coyote and will have a 7-inch screen, while a Hollywood device will have a 10-inch screen. An Android-based smartphone is also said to be on the way.
“Five or six” new devices is probably a bit of an exaggeration, and the end result will probably be just a couple of new devices with various different options apiece. Further details might be available on Thursday this week, when Amazon is set to announce its Q2 earnings via a live webcast at 2pm PT / 5pm ET.
