New Zealand children’s author Margaret Mahy, best known for titles such as A Lion in the Meadow (1969) and The Man Whose Mother Was a Pirate (1987), has died at the age of 76 following a short illness.
Having first worked as a librarian, Mahy was able to get a number of her short stories published and she came to international attention with the release of her first novel, A Lion in the Meadow. She became a fulltime writer in 1980 and she was later given an honorary doctorate by the University of Canterbury.
During her lifetime, Margaret Mahy was given a number of awards, including her selection as one of the icons featured in the Twelve Local Heroes bust collection.
