FastPencil and Barnes & Noble are teaming up to offer physical distribution to B&N stores for select ebook authors. The program will be available to members of the selective FastPencil PREMIERE group, whose books will be distributed via the Wavecrest imprint.
It seems authors will be picked based on their past sales, so this isn’t a Createspace-style free-for-all. Rather, the service looks set to offer selected authors a chance to get their ebooks into physical B&N stores. It’s not clear how many authors will be targeted for the program, but this does seem to be a new opportunity for self-published authors to expand upon a certain level of success that they might have achieved digitally.
There’s no word as to when the new program is going to launch, but this looks like the latest example of B&N seeking to break Amazon’s dominance of the market. Since Amazon lacks physical bookstores (for now), this is one of the areas where B&N might have an advantage.
