Weinstein Books, the publisher of You Changed My Life: A Memoir is giving away free ebook copies for people who go to see the movie version. Anyone who goes to a participating theater between July 27th and August 3rd can get a coupon code allowing them to download the ebook from sites such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Apple.
Abdel Sellou’s book tells the story of a quadriplegic French aristocrat who forms a strong bond with an Algerian man he hires as a helper. The movie version, titled The Intouchables, was a huge hit when it was released in France in late 2011 and was released in the US a couple of days ago.
A lot of publishers have been experimenting with ways of using ebooks to help with publicity, although it’s hard not to wonder whether this promotion undermines the perceived value of ebooks. Presumably the aim is to get people to read the digital version and then buy a physical copy, in which case the ebook is functioning as a kind of flyer for the ‘real thing’.
