E.L. James has become Amazon.co.uk’s most successful author of all time. Her Fifty Shades… series has now outsold J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter saga, a remarkable feat considering Rowling had a considerable headstart over James.
More than 4m copies of the Fifty Shades… series have been sold when you add up the print and ebook editions. Anyone who has ventured out of the house in recent months can probably attest to the fact that pretty much every shop in the western world has been piled high with copies of the series. Fifty Shades of Grey and its sequels have certainly been the defining literary phenomenon of the year so far.
The Fifty Shades… books famously started out as Twilight fan fiction before James made some changes and published the first volume herself in May 2011. The two sequels followed in September 2011 and January 2012, and eventually Vintage Books picked up the entire series. The rest, as they say, is history.
