Kobo Writing Life is offering 80% royalty rates for certain self-published books between September and November 2013. The 80% rate is 10% above the usual maximum and applies to IPP Term books; the non-IPP royalty rate of 45% remains unchanged.
Kobo launched its Writing Life self-publishing portal earlier in the summer, allowing authors to unload their work directly to the site rather than having to go through a distributor such as Smashwords. They claim that since the launch, they’ve seen sales in the self-publishing category shoot up by 700%, with authors from 73 countries taking part.
The 80% rate is 10% higher than the 70% maximum offered by Amazon. Kobo’s IPP Term range (i.e. the range of prices eligible for the top rate) is also larger that the range offered by a number of their rivals, covering books from $1.99 to $12.99.
