Emily Giffin is a traditionally-published author, but a recent row over Amazon reviews on her new book Where We Belong serves as a reminder of (a) how comments can snowball in the vacuum of online life, and (b) how these things can drag on and on until people start getting upset in real life.
You can read a summary of what happened here and also here, but the short version is that Giffin’s husband allegedly responded to a review of his wife’s book and the whole thing kicked off from there, spreading from Amazon over to Facebook as fans, former fans and non-fans bundled into an argument that became increasingly heated. It seems to have settled down now, but it’s a cautionary tale of why authors (and their spouses) should probably not respond to individual reviewers on Amazon.
