Amazon is launching new Kindle devices in Santa Monica today, but the company seems to have jumped the gun a little by running a TV advert that shows the new devices in advance. During a Giants vs. Cowboys game, the commercial – which you can see here – appears to show both a new Kindle e-Ink device (featuring the new Paperwhite technology) and a new (seven-inch?) Kindle Fire tablet.
It was always pretty clear that a new e-Ink device and a new Fire would be released by Amazon this week, and the commercial doesn’t resolve the key question of whether there’ll also be a ten-inch device. Some believe Amazon has to launch a ten-incher in order to compete with the iPad, while others believe this launch will happen separately in a month or two. With millions of words having been written on the subject over the past few months, we’ll all find out the answer in a few hours.
What the commercial does show is that Amazon appears to be putting some serious firepower behind the new devices, and we can probably expect more TV spots to come. The tablet and e-reader markets are becoming increasingly crowded, and Amazon can’t rely on brand recognition alone to keep their devices at the head of the pack.
