Kobo has announced a deal with the Booksellers Association of the UK and Ireland (BA) to offer Kobo ereaders in independent bookstores across the two countries. The deal, which is similar to one signed with the American Booksellers Association back in August, will also see Kobo ebook titles being offered via the websites of many independent stores.
The Booksellers Association of the UK and Ireland represents more than 95% of independent booksellers in the two countries, organising programs such as the book token scheme. The details of their link-up with Kobo aren’t clear, particularly in terms of how independent stores will offer (and benefit from) ebooks. Nevertheless, independent bricks and mortar stores have been struggling to gain a foothold in the ebook market, and this might offer some of them an important lifeline. Or it might not…
