A new ebookstore is offering 100% royalties for authors. Payhip is London-based, and allows authors to upload their titles and then share links to their sales page. Payments are handled through Paypal, and authors have access to what looks like a quite detailed metrics page which includes data on page views as well as sales.
At first glance, Payhip might seem like an unusual venue for selling ebooks. The site doesn’t seem to have a conventional storefront, but that doesn’t seem to be the idea at all. The idea is that authors can share links via social media. Payhip is only a few weeks old, but already looks like it could be a service to keep an eye on for any author who wants to have a presence outside the Amazon ecosystem.
While offering 100% royalties, the company looks set to make money by offering a range of pro features in the near future. These will apparently include deeper metrics and customizable domain names. This type of freemium model has been a success for a number of other sites, so there’s no reason to doubt it can also work for Payhip. There are lots of ebookstores springing up these days, but this looks like one that could actually be pretty effective.
