A 16-year-old One Direction fan has secured a publishing deal with Penguin’s Razorbill imprint for a piece of fan fiction she wrote about the band. Titled Loving the Band, Emily Baker’s story was originally released via the Movellas site, a kind of social network for people who like writing and sharing short stories.
With millions of fans worldwide, the British band have a huge audience base who will likely lap up Baker’s work. More than 30,000 fans reportedly responded to the original posting of the work, which will have new material when it’s released in ebook format on November 1st. You can read a sample of the book at the end of The Independent’s article about Baker’s success.
This year has seen a number of fan fiction success stories, most notably E.L. James’ Fifty Shades… series which began as a story linked to the world of Twilight. Fan fiction has the obvious advantage of a built-in audience, although legal issues mean names often have to be changed before the work is released commercially.
