Here’s a story that will raise a smile with any UK readers who used to go to car boot sales. Haynes Publishing, the company behind those technical manuals for cars that used to turn up all over the place, have launched their first ebooks (source). Interestingly, they’ve decided to sell direct from their website rather than via the likes of Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
Initial titles include biographies of the likes of Bernie Ecclestone and Joey Dunlop. Haynes’ is also launching interactive versions of some of its key manuals, which will include videos, search functions, conversion calculators and other features. It’ll be interesting to see whether the company eventually decides to add their titles to Amazon as well.
Since the early 1960s, Haynes has published hundreds of guides to various machines, as well as manuals based on fictional concepts such as Star Trek vessels. Since I almost never get to indulge in such things on Indie Bookspot, I might as well take this opportunity to point you to this T-shirt of a Haynes-style Dalek from Doctor Who.
